Is Portsmouth a walkable city?
Absolutely! Portsmouth is a nationally recognized “Walk Friendly Community.” Its compact, historic downtown is perfectly designed for exploration on foot, featuring a blend of colonial architecture, brick sidewalks, and scenic paths along the Piscataqua River. With restaurants, boutiques, galleries, historic sites, theaters, and the waterfront all within a few blocks of one another, the city’s layout encourages you to park your car and take in the sights at your own pace.
What are the main distinct neighborhoods to explore?
Downtown is the heart and social hub of the city, with streets filled with shopping, dining, arts, and historic sites. The Waterfront offers scenic harbor views, seafood restaurants, and cruises along the Piscataqua River. The West End is known for its breweries, family-friendly restaurants, creative local businesses, and Portsmouth’s only downtown supermarket. The North End is home to popular hotels and inns and specialty shops, and serves as an easy gateway to the rest of the Seacoast.
Are there official walking tours available?
Yes. Guided walking tours are a wonderful way to experience Portsmouth’s rich history, architecture, and maritime heritage. Portsmouth Harbour Trail Tours are led by knowledgeable guides who highlight the historic homes, trademark tugboats and working waterfront, vibrant Market Square, colorful Prescott Park, and more. Tours offered by the Black Heritage Trail of New Hampshire (BHTNH) explore the rich and often forgotten African-American history. And Revolutionary Portsmouth Walking Tours take visitors back to the days leading to the American Revolution, from the historic shipyards on the Piscataqua River to homes, assembly halls and taverns where supporters of independence rallied. Check out our Calendar for more information about available tours.
What kind of water and boat tours can I take?
Getting out on the water is one of the best ways to experience the Seacoast. Choose from narrated harbor cruises, historic Gundalow sails, lighthouse and Isles of Shoals excursions, private charters, fishing trips, kayak rentals, paddleboarding, and seasonal wildlife cruises. Whether you’re looking for history, sightseeing, or adventure, there’s a tour for every interest.
Is Portsmouth a good destination for food lovers?
Absolutely! Portsmouth has earned a national reputation as one of New England’s top foodie destinations. With restaurants ranging from casual seaside lobster shacks to craft breweries to award-winning culinary establishments, the city offers a delicious experience for every palate. Portsmouth’s twice a year Restaurant Week offers an opportunity to dine on special prix fixe menus that highlight the creativity, character, and hospitality of the region. Whether you’re looking for fresh Atlantic seafood or sophisticated farm-to-table cuisine, you will find it in the heart of the Seacoast.
Where can I find a calendar of local events and festivals?
